Found in homes, offices and workspaces everywhere, door locks are the most common type of lock that you will come across in your locksmith training. They are usually of a traditional, but flawed design, with many locksmiths complaining that they cannot make them as secure as they would like them to be. Certainly in the case of the conventional cylindrical lock, burglars have been known to either simply pick the lock or even quietly cut a hole in the door and reach in. The problem is that even if further measures were to be made against these dangers, the costs may then become too high for the consumer to be able to afford the locks in the first place.
Money concerns aside, however, there are many options for additional security with door locks, depending on their setting, including night latches, spring-bolt locks or cylinder guards. Then there are the various keyless options to consider. Digital mechanical door locks requiring an inputted code are often installed to replace more vulnerable conventional locks and are increasingly popular.
They cannot be picked in the same way as a traditional lock, with many auditing the number of successful and unsuccessful attempts to bypass them. Train to be a locksmith at higher levels of locksmith training courses and you may even encounter biometric scanners (normally using fingerprints), another comparatively high-tech possibility that remains unfamiliar to many people.
